7 Reasons Why your loved one’s inheritance could be at risk

  1. THERE’S NO WILL or it can’t be found at the time: In these cases, loved ones will now inherit according to strict government rules, which may not be what you wanted.
  2. CARE FEES: If you don’t prepare for and manage the impact of potential care fees, this could significantly reduce what is left for your loved ones to inherit.
  3. TAX: Increased home values and the growth in personal wealth could produce an unexpected inheritance tax bill, often because people didn’t think it applied to them. Again, this could reduce the value of their inheritance.
  4. FUTURE SPOUSE: When you are gone, if your spouse / partner remarries the “new spouse” could inherit everything putting your loved ones inheritance at risk.
  5. SECOND RELATIONSHIPS: The inheritance of children in “blended” families is at risk when the first person passes because the surviving spouse could favour their own biological children when they go.
  6. UNMARRIED PARTNERS: Because rules are different to marriage, your unmarried partner may not inherit, it could go to others.
  7. DIVORCE: If you left your adult child an inheritance and then they later got divorced, part of that inheritance could go to your ex daughter / son in law as part of the divorce settlement.
