Hammersley Homes is hosting our first-ever charity walk, the Golden Steps Walk. This family-friendly event aims to raise awareness about mental illness and provide vital support to those experiencing isolation. We welcome participants of all ages and abilities, by taking part, you will be making a meaningful difference to the lives of vulnerable adults with metal health challenges.

Together, we can transform the future for those in need, one step at a time.

Every stride you take helps the 550,000 individuals battling schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other psychoses. Help us build our community and reach even more people who need our support.

Join us on 13th September at 5:30pm, whether you are looking to get out in nature and enjoy the outdoors, get more active, or to create lasting memories with family and friends, our Golden Steps Walk is the perfect event to get involved with. Every Step Makes a Difference, whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just starting out, the Golden Steps Walk welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. Walk solo, with loved ones, or in memory of someone special.

All participants who complete the walk and raise a minimum of £10 will receive a Hammersley Homes pin badge, bottled water, and a healthy snack bar.

Q: When and where is the event taking place?

A: The event will take place on 13th September 2024, starting at 5:30 PM at Wilverley Plain Car Park. Please arrive 15 minutes early. The event wraps up by 7:30 PM.

Q: Who can take part in the walk?

A: Anyone can join the walk! The path is accessible for wheelchairs and baby strollers. However, it is important to note that there are some steep inclines along the route, which may pose challenges for those pushing prams or wheelchairs. Participants under 12 must be registered and accompanied by someone 18 or older.

Q: How can I register for the walk?

A: You can register by visiting our registration page on the website and completing the form, selecting your ticket type, and making a payment if required.

Q: Is there a deadline for registration?

A: The deadline for registration is 31st August 2024. We recommend registering early to secure your spot and take advantage of the free registrations for the first 50 participants.

Q: Are dogs allowed?

A: Yes, dogs are welcome. For safety and enjoyment, dogs must be on a lead at all times and wear a muzzle if required by law.

Q: What fitness levels do I need for the walk?

A: The walk is designed for moderate fitness levels. Walkers can complete the course in 45-120 mins. Runners might complete it in 20-50 minutes. You can prepare using the “Couch to 5K” app by the NHS, a 9-week program to build running stamina. The walk is self-paced, so walking, jogging, or running are all welcome.

Q: When to check with your doctor before training?

A: Although moderate physical activity such as brisk walking is safe for most people, health experts suggest that you talk to your doctor before you start any training or exercise program if any of the following apply:

  • You have heart disease.
  • You have type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
  • You have kidney disease.
  • You have arthritis.
  • You’re being treated for cancer, or you’ve recently completed cancer treatment.
  • You have high blood pressure.

Q: How can I volunteer for the walk?

Q: What are the ticketing options available?

A: We offer three types of tickets:

  • Standard Registration (£5): Pay the full event cost, and fundraise whatever is possible for you, with no minimum requirement.
  • Charity Sponsorship (Free): If you commit to raising a minimum of £10, you do not need to pay the registration fee. However, if you fail to raise your committed pledge, you will have to pay the £10 before the walk on 13th September 2024.
  • Children (Free): Up to two children under 12 can walk for free per registered adult.

Q: What does the Charity Sponsorship option entail?

A: If you choose the Charity Sponsorship option, you commit to raising a minimum of £10. If you succeed, you do not pay the registration fee. However, if you do not succeed in raising your pledged amount, you will have to pay the £10 yourself before the walk on 13th September 2024. We provide support and resources to help you meet your fundraising goals.

Q: Do children need to register?

A: Yes, children under 12 need to register even if walking for free. This helps us manage the event better and ensures we have necessary details for all participants.

Q: What about children aged 13-16 years?

A: Children aged 13-16 must be registered with either a Standard or Charity Sponsorship ticket type under an adult’s registration. Minors under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

A: Payment can be made via credit/debit card during the registration process. If you choose the Charity Sponsorship option, no payment is required at the time of registration.

  • Reusable Water Bottle: Bring your own filled bottle. We will have limited water bottles available, and please dispose of any bottles responsibly in designated bins to avoid littering.
  • Appropriate Clothing: Check the weather and dress in breathable sports gear. Well-fitting trainers are essential to prevent blisters or sore feet.
  • Sun Protection: Use sunscreen with at least SPF15 and a 4- or 5-star rating.
  • Mobile Phone: Ensure your phone is fully charged for security purposes.
  • Participant ID Number: Bring your ID number provided during registration.
  • Essentials Only: We do not offer a bag drop facility, so bring only what you need.
  • Donations you have collected, if want to handover during the event.

A: Yes, there are toilets available near the car park, and the trail is suitable for different ages and abilities.

Q: Is car park available?

A: Yes, parking is available but limited to 150 spaces. We encourage carpooling to ensure availability for all participants and other visitors to the forest.

A: The event will go on rain or shine, so please come prepared for the weather. In the unlikely event of severe weather, we will notify participants of any changes via email and our social media channels.
