Hello Everybody! 👋

We are eager to share with you all of the things that have been going on at Hammersley Homes this month and the exciting things we have in store just around the corner. As always a MASSIVE thank you to those of you who have supported us in our recent endeavours. We are so grateful to you. Without you, we could not do the work that we do to support those with long-term mental illness so for the last time (actually… it probably won’t be)
thank you!

It's All About Giving...

For this year’s Big Give, we aimed to raise £10,000 …. and WE DID IT!
We are so extremely grateful to The Big Give for their 50% Champion funding, and to those of you that contributed to this. We are thrilled about the prospects this creates for us as we expand our Outreach Programme to include more and more of the people that need us.

To find out more about our Outreach programme, click here.

If you would like to support Hammersley Homes, but don’t have the funds to do so – there are plenty of other ways you can help us. The Giving Circle are donating £500,000 to people’s favourite charities this year and all you need to do to help us receive some funding is vote. This is ongoing so you can vote once, twice or even weekly!

A vote for us costs only 10 seconds of your time and could make a massive difference to those suffering from long-term mental illness.

Getting something back can be pretty great too!

If you’re feeling lucky, check out our Lottery!
With £25,000 up for grabs plus bonus prizes, you’ve got to be in it to win it.
You win prizes, we help people. What’s not to like?

Loneliness Awareness Week

June 12th marked the start of this year’s Loneliness Awareness Week- a time of the year when we can all reflect on our experiences of loneliness and empathise with those who it currently affects. With 1 in 5 of us having experienced loneliness at some stage of our life, it is clear that this is an epidemic we can no longer ignore.

At Hammersley Homes, we strive to combat loneliness through our ever-expanding Outreach Programme that supports people living with long-term mental illness. Our volunteers offer our clients the hand of friendship as they work with them to meet their needs and help them live their best lives. We all need laughter, kindness and companionship and these are just some of the things that our brilliant team of volunteers have in abundance.

If loneliness is something that you or a loved one struggle with, there are plenty of support networks out there for you. For more information, follow the links below and remember that reaching out is the hardest and most important step.

Men's Mental Health Week

Running alongside Loneliness Awareness Week was Men’s Mental Health Week. This year the focus was to review men’s health as a whole, encouraging men to “run an MOT” on their minds and body.

We have all heard the statistics surrounding men’s mental health, one of the most horrifying being that suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45. This is all the more worrying when it was revealed that 40% of men would not seek help until they were experiencing suicidal thoughts or thoughts of self-harm. Men’s Mental Health Week aims to encourage men to check themselves over and give weight to their mental well-being in ways that men often don’t.

In response to Men’s Mental Health Week, the NHS has provided resources that give people more control over managing their life and encourages everyone to create an environment for men that is accepting and supportive of this process.

In the News

Priory Hospital Arnold has been told that it must improve or risk being shut down. When a review of staffing was conducted it was found that 53% of the nursing posts required were vacant. Understaffing is a huge issue in this industry and one of the major causes of poor safeguarding. We need to seriously consider nurses’ pay, benefits, training and working conditions if we are to fix this problem.

Ethnically diverse staff at Park House mental health unit report facing racial abuse from patients that is not properly dealt with and feel they have less opportunity for career progression than their white counterparts. The institution has apologised and made promises to make improvements but we need to remember that diversity is key in moving forwards and making positive change.

THE GOOD NEWS

A construction worker opens up about his own struggles with mental health and the programmes he has set up for his workers to share their feelings.

Wiltshire will welcome a new primary school next year for children with social, emotional and mental health needs. There is a shortage of places for children with additional needs to thrive and this is a step in the right direction to ensure all children have long term access to the resources they need to learn.
