Bruce White tells us what it’s like to be one of our Hammersley Homes Outreach Support Workers
What’s it like being an Outreach Support Worker at Hammersley Homes?
If you’re wondering what a typical day looks like for an Outreach Support Worker, the honest answer is simple: no two days are ever the same. At Hammersley Homes, Outreach Support Workers help our clients build confidence, independence and meaningful connections within their community.
It’s a role I genuinely love — partly because of the variety, partly because of the amazing people I meet, and occasionally because tea and cake are very much part of the job!
Supporting adults with enduring mental health challenges
At Hammersley Homes, our clients are a wonderful mix of personalities, interests and life experiences. Some are early risers ready to greet the day, while others are loyal fans of a cosy duvet morning. Some enjoy getting out and exploring new places, while others feel happiest spending time at home.
Each client receives a two-hour support session every two weeks. During this time, we focus on activities that support wellbeing, confidence and social connection.
That might include:
- Spending time outdoors in nature
- Visiting a pottery studio or creative space
- Meeting at a café (preferably one with good cake!)
- Going swimming
- Visiting a gallery or art exhibition
These activities may sound simple, but they can make a huge difference in helping someone rebuild confidence and reconnect with the world around them.
Connection Sessions: building community
Alongside our one-to-one visits, we also host monthly Connection Sessions. These sessions bring our clients together for shared activities, conversation and refreshments.
Recent activities have included:
- Cycling with PEDALL
- Nature walks at Dibden Inclosure
- Sailing to the Isle of Wight with Rona Sailing
- Creative workshops with Coda Music and Arts
- Outdoor exploration with Project Manna
- Ten-pin bowling in Southampton
- Sport, board games and crafts in West Totton
These sessions have become very special occasions. Over time, they help our clients get to know each other, build friendships and develop trust within a supportive environment.
The importance of trust and relationships
A large part of my role is about building trust and meaningful relationships. We spend time listening, offering companionship and creating a safe space where my clients can feel accepted and valued.
Reliability is important, but so is being human and open. Even though visits may only happen once every two weeks, over time these connections grow stronger and can become incredibly meaningful.
Practical support that makes a difference
The role also involves providing practical, everyday support. This might include:
- Helping someone declutter kitchen cupboards or tidy a garage
- Making phone calls to services such as Universal Credit
- Accompanying my clients to doctor, hospital or CMHT appointments
- Helping create a budget or plan meals for the week
These small tasks can remove barriers and help people feel more in control of their daily lives.
Celebrating progress and independence
Understanding the mental health challenges is important. But what’s even more powerful is recognising the moments of progress.
One of the most rewarding parts of the role is seeing someone take a step forward — however small that step may seem.
Sometimes that means a decision to volunteer, apply for a job, or simply feel more confident leaving the house. Every step toward greater independence, confidence and self-understanding is something to celebrate.
Being able to witness that journey is an absolute privilege.
